TRAINING CLASS DESCRIPTION
The 2026 5K Training Class is an 8-week program designed to help individuals of all fitness levels prepare for the Memorial Day 5K race (late May). Whether you are a beginner aiming to complete your first 5K or an experienced runner looking to improve your time, this program provides the structure, guidance, and support you need to succeed.
The class begins on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at 6:15 PM outside 1st Place Sports, Baymeadows Store (3931 Baymeadows Road, Jacksonville, FL 32217). Come prepared for a short run or walk that evening following a brief introduction.
If you're unsure whether this class is right for you, join us on the first day to learn more. Past participants, pace leaders, and the coach will be available to answer questions and help you decide if this training program is a good fit for you.
YOUR RUNNING LEVEL
This class is open to runners of all levels.
- Beginners are welcome with no prior experience. We will guide you through a gradual build-up using run/walk intervals and steady progression to prepare you to confidently complete a 5K.
- Experienced runners looking to improve their 5K time will focus on consistent mileage, progressive long runs, speed development, cross-training, and strength work.
Each week includes structured workouts with options to match your current fitness level and goals.
GROUP RUNS
Tuesdays
(Except for the first class, which meets at Baymeadows)
All other Tuesday classes meet at 6:15 PM on the Riverwalk outside the Winston Family YMCA – Riverside.
We begin with a brief group discussion covering training topics and tips, and the run starts promptly at 6:30 PM.
Most Tuesdays will offer:
- Alternative speed or bridge workouts for runners who are looking to improve their 5K time but cannot attend Wednesday track workouts.
- A non-speed option with a planned route for those new to the 5K distance or those who prefer a steady effort instead of speed work.
This allows every runner to choose the workout that best fits their goals.
Saturdays
Saturday group runs begin at 7:00 AM at various locations around Jacksonville, including Riverside, Ortega, Nocatee, San Marco, and the Beaches.
Distances will vary and include:
- Shorter options for newer runners
- Longer options (6+ miles) for experienced runners who would like additional endurance work
Wednesdays (Optional)
For those aiming to improve their 5K times, we highly encourage attending the Bolles Track workouts. These workouts focus on speed development, interval training, and pacing.
Please note: The Wednesday track workouts are a JTC member benefit and are organized and coached by Coach James. They are not organized by Sharon, the coach and coordinator of this 5K training class.
All JTC members are welcome to attend the Bolles Track workouts, whether or not they are participating in this class.
PACE LEADERS
We have dedicated pace leaders helping guide multiple pace groups at both Tuesday and Saturday runs. Our goal is to support a wide range of paces and experience levels. While we do our best to cover as many pace groups as possible, routes will always be provided in advance so every participant feels confident and prepared.
TOPICS TO BE DISCUSSED
Group discussions, held before most Tuesday group runs, may cover topics such as:
- Training Plan Development
- Pacing Strategies
- Injury Prevention & Recovery
- Nutrition for Runners
- Running Shoe Selection
- Stretching & Warm-Ups
- Mental Preparation for Race Day
- Rest & Recovery
- Cross-Training Recommendations
